The Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, once again proved that she remained the first and foremost choice of the people of Bengal. Her party the Trinamool Congress swept all seven civic bodies winning 140 out of 148 wards that went to polls recently. Lagging far behind, the BJP won six of the 8 wards that voted against Trinamool. One ward went to the Left Front while the Congress could not open its account. The BJP harped on the inclined attitude of the ruling party towards the Muslim minority. The BJP vitiated the atmosphere with communal feelings following its old tradition. One is amazed that the secular credential of the Left Front and Congress could not impress the voters. These parties have to build up their grass root support to stop the march of the BJP. Mamata Banerjee is an undisputed leader of Bengal as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is for the north India. No doubt, the machination of the BJP succeeded to trap the Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who merged his JD(U) with the NDA, but the entry into the south is still a dream for the party chief Amit Shah.
Mamata Banerjee is calling shots in Bengal, but outside the state her magic can hardly click. She is riding the wave of popularity but her government still to fulfill the aspirations of the people. Developmental activities are going on snail’s pace. Much has to be done for job generation and industrial progress. She must also wake up to the challenge thrown by the BJP. The people will always be looking towards the concrete development that can change their life. Didi being an experienced politician, need not be reminded this basic principle.
