The UPA chairperson and former Congress president, Sonia Gandhi has practically come forward to bring about unity in opposition ranks. It is reported that she has invited all opposition leaders to discuss the crucial issue. She has planned a dinner with top opposition leaders. It is to be seen who will attend the dinner and how far the discussion will succeed to bring about the unity. Every opposition party is making efforts to defeat the BJP candidates in by polls and also in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but they are following different ways. When there is more than one candidate contesting the BJP nominee, the votes are bound to be divided. This will help the BJP to win the poll.
At this moment every assembly and Lok Sabha seat is important for the BJP to grab and for the opposition parties to defeat the ruling party at the centre. If some seat falls vacant and it belongs to the opposition party, it should be given to the same opposition party and other parties should jointly support it against the BJP. With this spirit only the third front should be formed. Now in Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats had fallen vacant, and the BSP decided to support the Samajwadi Party. It is a welcome step, but no consultation was done with the Congress which earlier announced its candidates. Again the votes will divide leading to the victory of the BJP candidates.
In Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh by polls, Congress defeated the BJP. It is a clear proof of the fact that in both the states which are going to polls before Lok Sabha elections the BJP got weakened. Meanwhile the Telangana State’s Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced a third front. It is a haphazard decision on the part of the Chief Minister. No one knows what prompted Mr Rao to make this decision.
