After enjoying power in Jammu and Kashmir with the PDP for three years, the BJP dumped its ally to run away from the responsibility for the chaos created in the sensitive state and to show the people that it was the PDP Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who turned the state worse and therefore it was untenable for the BJP to continue the alliance. The alliance government in the state destroyed the very base made by the UPA government to pave the way for peace. The Congress chief Rahul Gandhi reacted saying that the opportunistic BJP-PDP alliance set fire to J and K killing many innocent people including our brave soldiers. It cost India strategically and destroyed years of UPA’s hard work. If radicalism and separatism increased and the youth are joining separatist forces, it is only because the state government, as it had promised, did not gain the confidence of the Hurriyat group and the centre failed to take any concrete measures to bring peace to the strife-stricken state.
Not only did the separatist forces raise their ugly heads, the Hindutva forces also became aggressive. It was the most shameful act on the part of two state ministers to join the protest against the arrest of the criminals who were involved in the ghastly rape of an 8-year-old girl. Even advocates who are supposed to safeguard the law were part and parcel of the protest rally. It shows that communal as well as extremist forces were strident in the state. It was not remote that under these circumstances, the Ramzan ceasefire was marred by the deplorable killings of an army Jawan Aurangzeb and an editor of a popular newspaper Rising Kashmir. Shujat Bukhari was shot dead before his office in the heart of Srinagar.
If the situation turned to the worst, the BJP was fully responsible and by breaking the alliance it cannot run away from its binding obligation. It is an attempt to throw dust in the eyes of people on the eve of the 2019 elections.
