Indian Politics registered an interesting development when Priyanka Gandhi was appointed the General Secretary of UP (East) this week. Congress President Rahul Gandhi said “I am very happy that my sister Priyanka will assist me in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha polls, she is very capable,” while he also said that her appointment will help “initiate new thought in UP and will bring a positive change in UP politics.”
This move by the Indian National Congress is being hailed as the masterstroke by many political analysts ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls and her entry has reinvigorated the Indian political scenario. Wife of businessman Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi has always been at the helm of affairs in the Indian politics belonging to a heavily political family actively involved in India freedom struggle.
She has not only seen the Indian politics unfold up close but she has come forward many times to aid campaigning processes as well. In Indian general election 2004, she was the campaign manager of her mother Sonia Gandhi and also supervised many of her brother Rahul Gandhi’s rallies.
Priyanka Gandhi also proved her leadership skills when she directly dealt with huge crowds in her mother’s and brother’s constituencies of Rae Bareilly and Amethi. She has always been a fierce speaker establishing herself as one of the most influential orators in today’s Indian politics.
Her appointment as the Congress General Secretary for UP East has stirred up a defensive storm among the BJP and ally circles. Ruling party has commented that the appointment of Priyanka Gandhi only proves that Rahul Gandhi has failed to establish a leadership, though the State Elections just a month ago stated otherwise.
Rahul Gandhi has not only established himself as an able leader but the entry of Priyanka Gandhi in active politics has opened new horizons for the party. Priyanka Gandhi’s old interviews also depict that she was never interested in being a politician per se; instead she genuinely wished to help people and change the situation on the ground. While speaking about her joining politics in an interview with Rediff.com, she said: …I am very clear in my mind. Politics is not a strong pull, the people are. And I can do things for them without being in politics”
But today, she has taken up this opportunity to choose the mantel that suits her best, and taken the leadership in her hand not because she wants to but because she deserves it. A prime example of her popularity is the huge gathering for her talks in the constituency of Amethi where in every election, streets ring up with the slogan of Amethi ka danka, bitiya Priyanka (the clarion call from Amethi is for Priyanka [to stand in elections].
Apart from being an able leader, Priyanka Gandhi is also a qualified and educated woman. She completed her schooling from the Modern School and Convent of Jesus & Mary. She pursued her graduation in Psychology from Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi and later completed her MA in Buddhist Studies. She understands the psyche of the masses and knows how to carry herself with dignity.
It will be a huge responsibility for her to carry forward the legacy of the most prominent family in Indian politics. She comes from the family of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi the two most influential politicians in the history of modern India. Indira Gandhi led India to victory against the enemy of the States both inside and outside the national border. She was a fierce leader who was never afraid to call a spade a spade.
There is much talk of Priyanka Gandhi resembling Indira Gandhi both in her looks and demeanor, the nation awaits her to lead the nation to new heights of progress and development.
