It is a mark of insecurity on the part of PM Modi and BJP ideologues that they keep launching scathing attacks on the Nehru-Gandhi family and it is a mark of resilience on the part of Rahul Gandhi that he always counters scathing attacks from PM Modi with utmost humility and diligence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stirred a political furore this week claiming former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the father of Congress President Rahul Gandhi died as corrupt No. 1. PM Modi’s remark came in his bid to counter Rahul Gandhi’s campaign against him alleging that he was involved in malfeasance in the Rafale deal with France.
Addressing an election rally in Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, barely 40 km from Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency Amethi — which voted on Monday, PM Modi said, “Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as bhrashtachari No. 1 [corrupt No. 1].”
This is highly unbecoming for the Prime Minister of a country to use these terms for the former Prime Minister who laid down his life to safeguard the integrity of the country. He went on to make many derogatory remarks on the personal life of Rajiv Gandhi and alleged that Rajiv Gandhi used the INS Viraat of Indian Navy for holidays on Lakshwadeep Islands. This allegation has already been refuted by many Commanders who were serving in the Indian Navy during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi as the Prime Minister. They explain that Rajiv Gandhi visited those islands as PM and INS Viraat was stationed there for his back up security.
Despite all these rude and unfounded allegations, Rahul Gandhi has always maintained his composure and dignity. He replied that “Modi Ji, The battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul”. Congress president Rahul Gandhi admits that he did visit INS Viraat with his father, late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, but adds that it was an official trip, not a holiday. “Why would anyone holiday on an aircraft carrier? It’s not a cruise ship!” Gandhi says he doesn’t want to respond to the flurry of attacks on his father during the election campaign of 2019. “Mr Narendra Modi is obsessed with my family. I’m not obsessed with my family. I don’t think about my father, grandmother or great-grandfather as much as Mr. Modi does. He thinks that that’s the place where he’s going to find his escape. Best of luck to him!’’
Rahul Gandhi also raked up the Rafale issue to hit out at Narendra Modi saying that Prime Minister can talk as much as he wants about Rajiv Gandhi, but he should also talk about the jet deal with France. The Congress president, who has alleged irregularities in the defense deal, was referring to Modi’s recent remark stating that the Gandhi family used INS Virat as a “personal taxi” while holidaying on an island.
“Prime Minister Modi can talk as much as he wants about my father (Rajiv Gandhi) but he should also talk about Rafale deal and what he has done to give two crore jobs to the youth of the country,”
PM Modi is making desperate attempts to appeal to his voter base by maligning the Nehru-Gandhi family with baseless allegations and it is fairly evident that he is insecure about the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2019. The face of violence in Gujarat and the silent spectator of the plight of Muslims is today pointing fingers at Nehru-Gandhi family to hide his own demons.
