The National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally arrested the BJP sarpanch from Maldara in Shopian, Tariq Ahmed Mir, for having links with disgraced ex-DSP Davinder Singh and Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists. Mir, who had unsuccessfully contested the J&K assembly election from Wanchi seat on a BJP ticket, had been detained two months ago.
According to top intelligence sources, Mir was involved in providing logistical support to Hizb terrorists and, therefore, had solid links with the ex-DSP, who was caught on Jammu-Srinagar NH along with three Hizb terrorists whom he was transporting to Jammu in a car on January 11. Mir himself was a Hizb terrorist, who had surrendered in 2008.
NIA started looking for Mir after the arrested DSP and the three Hizb terrorists revealed that the BJP sarpanch was a conduit of terrorists and was providing logistical support to them. An NIA team then raided the Shopian house of Mir in February but he managed to escape. However, a couple of days later, the team nabbed him at the Baramulla home of his second wife, a Pakistani, and kept him under detention since.
Top intelligence sources said, Mir was also involved with the drug mafia operating in the Valley and was known for importing heroin and brown sugar from across the LoC through Pakistani infiltrators. Mir, the sources said, was into smuggling of weapons as well. He used to procure weapons from PoK through his contacts there and hand over the same to terrorists.
