Migrant Bus Crisis: A new low in BJP’s abysmal governance

The migrant crisis triggered by the unplanned lockdown of the Modi government is nowhere coming to an end. The UP government is neither making solid efforts to help the migrants nor is letting other parties make any gestures to alleviate the sufferings of the poor. While Yogi Government continues to massage its own ego, the migrant labourers continue to perish on the roads.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi wrote to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, requesting him to allow the grand old party to run 1,000 buses to ferry migrant workers back to their home state. The request came after several road mishaps led to many migrant labourers losing their lives.

“We will have to understand our responsibilities. They (migrant labourers) aren’t just Indians but India’s backbone. The country runs on their blood and sweat. It is everyone’s responsibility. It is not the time for politics,” she said.

But despite her efforts, the Yogi government’s decision to turn it into a political drama denied about one lakh migrants the chance to escape the misery of walking the highways and reaching home safely.

Firstly, the Yogi government started putting meaningless hurdles on the path to help the migrants. The list of the buses was called as fake and the meaningless paperwork was demanded. Secondly, the buses were denied entry into the UP State borders in a bizarre show of shamelessness and apathy towards the misery of poor migrants.

Priyanka Gandhi, in a surprise address on the party’s social media platforms, appealed to UP CM Yogi Adityanath that “it was time to rise above politics” and help migrants who were trudging home in the scorching heat.

Buses arranged by the Congress for the migrant workers started turning back from the Rajasthan-Uttar Pradesh border.

She expressed in her address that “If on May 17, the 500 buses provided by us at the Ghaziabad border had plied, at least 20,000 people would have reached home safely. If the 900 buses provided by us yesterday had been allowed, 72,000 people would have reached home safely in two days”.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra even asked the Yogi Adityanath government to allow the buses to ply even if it means “pasting BJP flags on these buses. If you want to say that you made those buses available, do it. But let the buses run. Please let us get the migrants home.”

Yogi government did not stop at that, an FIR was registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s personal secretary Sandeep Singh and UP Congress president Ajay Kumar alleging fraud and forgery for furnishing wrong details about the buses arranged by the Congress to carry migrant workers to their destination.

They claimed that out of 1049 buses, only 879 are genuine. Priyanka Gandhi again took to Twitter to express that since migrant labourers are in trouble, why is Yogi government not allowing the 500 buses to enter UP State Border. She also assured that 200 new buses will be made available within no time but let’s not keep the labourers waiting in scorching sun.

Once again, in a shocking display of apathy towards the poor, the Yogi government did not comply and the buses were recalled after waiting 24 hours at the State Border.

This is a difficult time for the country and most of all, for those unprivileged masses and downtrodden sections of society who barely make ends meet. These daily wage labourers are the life line of the country’s economy and leaving these poor labourers to die in scorching sun for petty politics is a new low even by the standards of the BJP’s abysmal governance.
